New Requirements for Wood Products – What Companies Need to Know
Starting from December 31, 2024, the new EUDR Regulation (2023/115) will come into effect. This regulation governs the supply of certain raw materials and products within the EU that are associated with deforestation and forest degradation.
What Does This Mean for Companies?
The regulation affects companies that import and market certain wood products within the EU. Verticas, as a company dealing with sales-promoting products, falls directly under this regulation when acting as an importer and distributor. This means that Verticas must obtain due diligence declarations and certificates (such as FSC certificates) from importers, wholesalers, or manufacturers for all wood trade products within the EU and present them to customers upon request.
Product Groups Primarily Affected
According to the regulation, the following products are affected if they fall under the HS code tariff groups 4417, 4419, 4420, and 4421 (examples):
Wooden notebooks
Wooden kitchen boards and bowls
Wooden shoehorns
and many more
Products such as wooden puzzles or wooden toys, which fall under tariff group 9503, are not affected.
What Changes Specifically?
The previous EU Timber Regulation (Regulation (EU) 995/2010) will be repealed with effect from December 30, 2024. For products manufactured before June 29, 2023, and placed on the market within the EU after December 30, 2024, a transition period until December 31, 2027, applies.
From January 1, 2025, Verticas must prepare a separate due diligence declaration for items in tariff group 44 and present corresponding certificates to customs authorities to demonstrate the deforestation-free production of raw materials.
