New Requirements for Wood Products – What Companies Need to Know Now
Starting on December 31, 2024, the new EUDR Regulation (2023/115) will come into effect. This regulation governs the supply of certain raw materials and products within the EU that are associated with deforestation and forest degradation.
What Does This Mean for Companies?
The regulation affects companies that import and market certain wood products within the EU. Verticas, a company specializing in promotional products, falls directly under this regulation when acting as an importer and marketer. This means Verticas must obtain relevant due diligence statements and certificates (such as FSC certificates) from importers, wholesalers, or manufacturers for all wood products within the EU and provide these to its customers upon request.
Affected Product Groups
According to the regulation, the following products, among others, are affected if they fall under the customs tariff groups HS Code 4417, 4419, 4420, and 4421:
Wooden notebooks
Wooden boards and bowls for the kitchen
Wooden shoehorns
Products such as wooden puzzles or toys, which fall under customs tariff group 9503, are not affected.
What Changes Specifically?
The existing EU Timber Regulation (EU 995/2010) will be repealed as of December 30, 2024. For products covered by the EU Timber Regulation that were produced before June 29, 2023, and placed on the market from December 30, 2024, there is a transitional period until December 31, 2027.
From January 1, 2025, Verticas must create a separate due diligence declaration for items in the tariff group 44 ff and submit the relevant certificates (e.g., FSC) to customs authorities to prove the deforestation-free production of the raw materials.
